Our fascination with American varsity has been dump tackled out of sight, and a new – well, quite old actually – form of preppy style has taken its place: British collegiate. Just look to JW Anderson x Uniqlo’s latest collection to see the impact that red brick sports societies are about to have on your wardrobe.
Entitled ‘A Sporting Way of Life’, the SS23 line comprises traditional athletic attire formed from flexible textiles, including the Japanese retailer’s beloved AIRism fabric. “This season reworks our idea of classic sportswear,” says creative director Jonathan Anderson.
This includes smarter pieces (a quick-drying AirSense blazer that nods to rowing culture; a cosy cricket cardigan formed from a light cotton-linen blend; a button shirt reminiscent of jockey attire), an outerwear piece (a transeasonal UV protection parka that’s playful with colour blocking) and accessories (striped socks; a panelled cap; a ribbon-adorned hat).
Alongside the archetypal pieces come summery garms ornamented with sporty graphics and patterns. One camp collar shirt, done in black and blue, is bedecked with a badminton pattern and available with co-ord shorts. Another, done in blue and khaki, is complete with a hand-drawn tennis graphic.
The JW Anderson x Uniqlo SS23 collection drops on Thursday 30 March exclusively at Uniqlo, with prices starting at £4.90.
