The Best Anti-Aging Creams for Men
Can a moisturiser really turn back time? It depends what skincare sins you've committed. The honest truth on anti-ageing creams, right this way.
We know that things get better with age, yet among the considered line-up of men's skincare on your bathroom shelf, there's still always room for an anti-aging cream. Sure, we might have loosened up the lexicon a little – now, anti-aging has been usurped by words like 'brightening', 'rejuvenating' and 'revitalising' – but we’re ultimately still after the same thing: to look like we were born a few years after the date on our driving license.
Luckily, the latest school of anti-aging creams for men will do just that. While none will deliver levels of time-freezing skin wizardry solely reserved in real life for Paul Rudd, the best formulas out there will bring about a host of modest yet pleasing benefits.
As Aesthetic Doctor & SkinCeuticals Brand Expert Dr Ana Mansouri explains, the first thing to understand is that your chosen product must be used consistently: there is no overnight miracle cure in skincare. “Topical products can be very effective, but skincare takes time and patience,” she says. “It is therefore essential to manage your expectations: products often take months to start having a visible effect. In time, a good skincare regimen can improve (to a point) issues surrounding radiance, hydration, pigmentation, texture and even wrinkles.”
And the things that may require a trip to the clinic? “Examples of conditions that are going to require more invasive measures include jowling, skin laxity and under-eye bags: here, skincare alone will have a very limited effect.”
So, what exactly can an anti-ageing cream do? Firstly, the big one: wrinkles. A cream well-placed to tackle those entrenched forehead lines will likely include one of three ingredients. “The most effective rejuvenating ingredients with the strongest clinical data backing their effects include SPF, vitamin C and retinol,” says Dr. Mansouri.
Nothing outside a surgeon’s clinic will give you the tightly pulled visage of a reality TV star, but a cream containing retinol will do a stellar job of replumping the outermost layers of the skin, fading fine, feathery lines in the process. Vitamin C is your antioxidant protector, shielding your skin from collagen-depleting pollutants in the air. And SPF? Well, that one’s obvious. Wear it, or spend your later years regretting it.
For sun spots (we told you to wear sunscreen), an antioxidant formula is the fast track to a more uniform skin tone: just be sure to get a decent one (we can help with that) as these ingredients tend to be structurally unstable, which basically means they go off quickly.
Dehydrated skin that looks crepey and feels dry is a fairly easy one to treat: get yourself a hyaluronic acid cream. Despite what the industry may tell you, HA isn’t the fanciest ingredient out there, and so you don’t need to venture into triple-figure territory to get a decent one.
And for skin that’s sloping slowly downwards, opt for an anti-ageing cream with peptides: these small chains of amino acids “work as the communication signals stimulating collagen production in the skin," says Dr. Mansouri. "They’re an excellent ingredient to slow down the ageing process over time.”
