The Best Shave Creams for Every Skin Type

From gentle gels to traditional foams

The most exciting grooming products go on the display shelf, and the most boring ones live under the sink: that’s how it has always been. But just because your shaving cream goes in the murky bit between the plasters and the spare toothpaste, it doesn’t deserve to be an afterthought.

The shaving cream you select matters as much as the razor – manual or electric – you choose to use it with. Find the best one for you, and it’ll facilitate a satisfyingly close yet reassuringly soothing shave.

Sure, it’s not necessary to be quite as forensic over your shaving cream as it is your moisturiser, but finding one that works with your skin type never hurts. Creamy formulas rich in emollients (think: shea butter) are ideal for coarse hair and dry complexions, while gels play well with oily skin (and unsteady hands). Natural oils will aid the glide of your blade while smelling quite nice, but sodium-lauryl-sulphate should be avoided unless you still find joy in doing the Kevin McCallister impression.

There are plenty of shaving creams (and gels and balms) on the market now, but these are the ones we always come back to.
