The fashion gods have been on a roll in recent years – appointments such as Pharrell for LV, Matthieu Blazy for Bottega, Nigo for Kenzo and Raf Simons for Prada have just made sense. And when the announcement came that Teddy Santis would be helming New Balance’s 'Made in USA' line for the foreseeable future, we once again thanked said deities for strengthening our faith.
In case you’re unfamiliar with Mr Santis, the Queens-born creative is the founder of Aimé Leon Dore (ALD), the American fashion label that has taken the world by storm since its establishment in 2014. Over the past few years, Teddy has regularly collaborated with New Balance via ALD. Most notably, the designer dug out the 550 from the archives and made the eighties basketball kick more popular than ever. Thus, news of his appointment as the Creative Director of the 'Made in USA' line was well-received but far from unexpected.
Just over one year after the announcement, Teddy’s takes on quintessential NB silhouettes began to see the light of day. The inaugural drop consisted of three trainers: a 990v1, 990v2 and 990v3. Each came imbued with an old money sensibility informed by the designer’s affinity for preppy, premium everyday essentials. Mere minutes after the release, thousands of pairs had already been sold – a testament to Santis' star status and eye for design.

Season 5, Part 1 also presents us with a greyscale version of a retro 990, the 990v4.

Elsewhere, the new-for-2024 colour scheme breathes some cool air onto a beloved eighties model, the New Balance 996.
Made in USA 998 – 'Grey with Black'
A 998 rounds off the pack; its black and grey layers affords the 31-year-old silhouette timeless appeal.
Made in USA 998 – 'Orange with Royal'
Orange and blue. But also cream, and green, and white, and black, and red. It sounds overwhelming, but Santis et al. make it work on this New Balance 998.
Made in USA 998 – 'Brown with Green'
Less beef and broccoli (a famous New Balance colour combination), more mint and chocolate (a combination we much prefer).
Made in USA 990v6 – 'Sepia with Orange'
Jet black adds drama to this sepia-toned 990v6, and don't we love it.
Made in USA 990v6 – 'Navy with White'
Not black, but blue, albeit a very, very dark shade of blue. Suits the 990v6, though – really helps the metallic silver hits upon the upper pop.
Made in USA 990v4 – 'Teal with White'
The Made in USA line takes the 990 – specifically, the 990v4 – back to its running roots with a two-tone colourway that mimics a modern running trainer. And, we think we're into it?

Not officially a festive colourway, but this gold and burgundy makeover of the reigning 990 model is undeniably imbued with Christmas spirit.

Santis subverts expectations by employing pastel hues to adorn this autumntime release. The result is a refreshing footwear option that works well with jeans, corduroys, cargo pants and the rest of the trousers in your chest of drawers.

The 998 is also decked out in ‘olive with incense’ for Season 4 of Santis’ Made in USA line. As the lookbook proves, the footwear offering pairs well with tracksuits – burgundy ones, in particular.
Made in USA 990v6 – ‘Sulphur with Green’
Teddy Santis' Made in USA line goes bananas for autumn '23, or rather 'sulphur with green'. The colourway hits the 990v6 first, recasting the modern classic into something more statement.
Made in USA 996 – ‘Sulphur with Forest Green’
The totally bananas colour combo also comes to the 996, the eighties silhouette that Santis and co. have made a strong case for over the last few months.

Call it the vanilla cone colourway in summer and by its much eerier official name, ‘mindful grey with bone’, as soon as we hit the spooky season.
