Green has become a go-to colour for watch brands over the past few years. It’s a trend Piaget has now got on board with, launching its two latest models, the Polo Green Date and Polo Green Skeleton. Its marketing materials trumpet the move as trailblazing and trendsetting. “Taking the collection into a new territory of expression for trendsetters who love design, elegance, and want to share their shade of bold.”

In fact, Piaget was once known for using strong primary colours. As famous for its jewellery as it was its watches, it pioneered ornamental stone dials in the 1960s and 1970s – Jackie Kennedy owned a jade Piaget.

The following decade it launched its gold Polo “sports” watch, the ultimate lifestyles-of-the-rich-and-famous flex. Making its debut in 1979 it weighed the same as a cricket ball, came powered by a then-prestigious quartz movement and went on to account for a third of Piaget’s sales. The company’s own adverts called the Polo line “the most expensive watches in the world”.

The Polo has continued to be part of the company’s catalogue ever since, getting a refresh in 2016 with the introduction of the Polo S line, a more youthful steel version of the original. (The ’S’ stood for ‘steel’, ‘style’ and the ‘signature’ of the brand.) A green-dialed model was launched in 2020 before the line undertook another rebrand earlier this year. The S is now know as the Polo Date, referencing the calendar window at 6 o’clock.

Now the Polo Polo S Polo Date gets its green makeover.

Marking something of a return to its core business after the headline-grabbing antics of making a watch as thin as a piece of paper followed by an even weirder tribute to the same watch, the new models are still anything but ordinary.

a man’s model with a strong character, this self winding watch has a casual elegance that is ideal for every occasion housed in a case middle combining round and cushion shaped forms in the purest piaget aesthetic tradition, the green coloured horizontal guilloché dial, divided up by luminescent applied hour markers, displays hours, minutes and seconds, and the date at 6 o’clock the 42 mm diameter gold case, water resistant to 10 atm, displays an elegant interplay of alternating polished and satin brushed finishes its sapphire crystal case back reveals the refined finishings of the piaget 1110p manufacture self winding movement and its slate grey coloured oscillating weight, engraved with the piaget coat of arms as the ultimate aesthetic detail, the trotteuse hand is decorated with an openworked letter “p”, the symbol of the famous swiss watchmaker

The Polo Green Date features a 42mm rose gold case, in contrast to the bright green dial and matching green alligator strap. The exhibition caseback shows off Piaget’s well-regarded in-house calibre 1110P movement.

The Polo Green Skeleton comes in a steel 42mm case with green bridges, the better to highlight the workings beneath, and is also on a green alligator strap. Both are, unambiguously, green.

What goes around comes around – as fitting an analogy for the business of timekeeping as any.
