How To Impress Me: Valeria Bilello

Dating advice from the stunning Italian model and actress

How To Impress Me: Valeria Bilello

With rich, espresso eyes and a voice that hums like a Sicilian summer, it’s easy to see why Valeria Bilello is worshipped in her native country.

She’s done bikini-clad presenting stints for MTV, studied at the Milan School of Cinema, directed her own short film and was the face of an Armani perfume: shifting seamlessly between high and low culture with effortless charm.

Luckily for us, she’s bagged her first English-speaking role playing James Corden’s new Venetian soprano pal in Paul Pott’s biopic One Chance – which hopefully means she’ll be around our fair isle a lot more.

Just on the off chance that you catch her on the Northern line, she tells Esquire how you can have a hope in hell of impressing her...

Men approaching me is fine, but only if the man is fun. Then they can try and get your attention in an enjoyable, clever way. Otherwise it’s going to be torture.

Never make a move too quickly. Men can put themselves in terrible, embarrassing situations that way. It's not a performance.

There is a time for flowers and surprises and taking a flight to join you somewhere where you’re not expecting them. I think though, someone taking care of you is more the little things. A man once asked if I needed any water for a trip, and I thought: "wow, that is so romantic. It’s better than a bunch of flowers."

The worst trait a man can have is being insecure. See also: vanity, ego, and knowing he's handsome and thinking it's important.

When men get ready, it’s okay to spend a little time on their appearance. But hours? No. I can’t stand even girlfriends spending that long in front of the mirror.

I like when men are casual and not too fashionable. I like when they don't really know what’s cool or not. The only mistake is trying too hard.

I think a nice pair of trousers and a loose sweater can look very sexy. I love navy and black for night times. And light colours – not bright orange or anything like that.

My ideal date would be a piano concert in a park in summertime. Or a heavy metal gig where we can really dance. Anything that doesn't end up feeling like an interview.

I like sitting at the bar of a restaurant instead of a table. It works well for dates. I like fun food. Something that you can eat with your hands: that’s sexy.

Marriage? If it happens, it happens. I wouldn’t mind doing other things before and maybe getting married in my fifties.

You always get curious about knowing someone who has a similar life to yours. My mum told me there is space in a relationship for one restless soul; the other one should be solid. I don’t think that’s true at all.

I can tell if a man isn’t genuine. You can not know anything about the person that is approaching you, and within five minutes you can see something in their eyes. You can tell if someone is really curious about you or not.
