Commercial nonsense it may be, but we think there are too few excuses to indulge in a bit of whisky shopping. When considering a gift for pater, we toyed with the antiseptic-peatiness of the Islay distilleries, pondered the smoothness of luxury blends (who, after all, would say no to a Johnny Walker Blue?), and quietly rejected the lowlands, opting instead for a true crowd-pleaser: Glenfiddich 12-year-old.
A classic expression from this hugely successful Speyside distillery (which, despite its size is still independently owned), this is a light and approachable style, with notes of pear and citrus. It’s good – but not so good it will break your heart (or your bank balance) to give it away. And all being well, your dad will happily share a dram or two. Sláinte.
