Wine for the weekend - Domaine les Yeuses 'Les Epices' Syrah 2007

Vin de Pays = plonk, non? Perhaps in some cases (we’d normally be reaching for a AOC in preference), but not when it comes to this cheeky syrah from Domaine Les Yeuses.

This year it was voted the best in its class in France (no mean feat); better still, its award-winning taste comes at a very reasonable price (£9). It's a butch, succulent red with an autumnal flavour (there’s something meaty/gamey about it, with robust ripe fruits and spice). The tannin is very obvious, which means – to our mind – partnering it with food is a must: partridge, pheasant, or perhaps even a nice steak. Delicious. £8.99 at Majestic www.majestic.co.uk
