London is a city with a burgeoning coffee culture, yet Fernandez & Wells continues to brew the best.

Despite Jorge Fernandez and Rick Wells’s empire constantly expanding across the capital — their latest outpost is in South Kensington — the pair initially joined forces with the intention of getting away from coffee. “I’d been at [London’s] Monmouth Coffee for six years, and I wanted a break,” Fernandez says. “We filled Lexington Street [their first opening] with wine, cured meats and cheeses.

It started as a shop, but gradually transformed into a food and wine bar.” It was the launch of their Beak Street shop in 2007 that debuted the iconic Fernandez & Wells ink-stamped coffee cups now seen clutched by Soho locals. A serendipitous opening: “We found this fantastic location, and we just thought we’d go for it,” said Fernandez. “It was our take on what a coffee shop should be.”
