Yes, you can do anything with CGI in films these days, but what you can do with animatronics is way more interesting and, you know, cooler. And as far animatronics experts go, John Nolan, is the go-to guy, as his brilliant short film, "Nolan's Cheddar", above, demonstrates.
His talents have already been utilised in Harry Potter and Dr Who, as well as the forthcoming Where The Wild Things Are and Clash Of The Titans, but "Nolan's Cheddar" was done just for fun (and no, it's not a real brand, though it should be). As well as training a mouse for the opening shots, he built a special robotic mouse for the heavy-duty bits — if you look closely you can see shots of it in his showreel. With aspirations to do more directing (though sadly, no cheese-making), John Nolan is definitely a name to watch.
