Gin Inspired Fragance

Yes, gin. Why the classic G & T is inspiring some of spring's best fragrances.

What makes a good G&T? The citric sting of a wedge of lime, the quinine dryness of a quality gin, the glacial bite of a few clinking ice cubes and the bittersweet fizz of proper tonic. Sounds good, right? Fragrance makers seem to agree.

Because the warm weather cocktail of choice has also inspired some of this summer’s best scents. They’re citrusy, dry, icy and bittersweet in equal measure, thanks to the addition of notes such as spicy black pepper, aromatic cardamom, acetic tea, woody vetiver and sharp Amalfi lemon, all of which combine to produce that very distinctive essence of a proper G&T.

Throw in some juniper — the berry base of mother’s ruin — and you’ve got the final kick. How much you'll want to spray on with hangover is another question.

1 | Voyage d’Hermes pure perfume by Hermès
Hermès’ breezy unisex classic has been re-released in a longer lasting pure perfume form (with less alcohol and a higher concentration of the base scent), and the effects are pretty intense. Top notes of citrus and cardamom give the scent a summery tang. (£60, Hermès)

2 | L’Eau Froide by Serge Lutens
A cold, brittle scent from the enigmatic French perfumer, it contains notes of mint, vetiver and seawater — the ice in your G&T. (£60, Serge Lutens)

3 | La Nuit de L’Homme Frozen Cologne by Yves Saint Laurent
In marked contrast to the original Nuit de L’Homme — which was far warmer with notes of lavender and cedar — this new variation with notes of lemon, bergamot and black pepper is light and lasts satisfyingly well on the skin. (£38, YSL)

4 | A*Men Pure Shot by Thierry Mugler
This sporty new fragrance is the latest special edition A*Men from perfumer Jacques Huclier. Notes of mint, cardamom, pepper, patchouli and juniper berries produce a scent you’d gladly down in one gulp (don’t, obviously). (£48, Mugler)

5 | Juniper Sling by Penhaligon’s
The name says it all. Inspired by London Dry Gin, Juniper Sling features notes of angelica, orange brandy, black pepper, cardamom and, of course, juniper. Effervescent and energetic, it’d be enough to buy this fragrance for its Thirties-inspired bottle alone. (£78, Penhaligons)
