Tom Hardy has revealed that he could make up to three Venom movies – but don't expect his symbiote anti-hero to crop up anywhere else.

The British star, who floated the idea of quitting acting altogether to American Esquire last month, has signed on for two sequels depending on the Marvel movie’s success.

The first film, in which he plays both Eddie Brock and his sharp-toothed alter-ego, is set for release on 5 October. He’ll be joined by Michelle Williams, Riz Ahmed, Woody Harrelson and Jenny Slate.

Speaking to Total Film, Hardy said: “We’ve signed up for three of them. So it’s very much an open case.

“We’ll see what people’s responses are to it. I think it’s an awesome character. I love playing both of them.”

He also spoke about how Venom would exist as a standalone universe if the series continued, disconnected from other Marvel franchises.

“It’s an amuse-bouche,” he said of the first film. “And, for Sony, it’s the Venom-verse launched in isolation, as it were.

“We’re all prepped for it to be a standalone universe. So whatever Sony want to attach to it at a later date, it’s a fulcrum piece. But let’s see what happens when it lands.”
