For a newspaper’s April Fool’s Day prank to function as an actual joke, it needs to include some kind of zany-yet-subtle clue that indicates the surrounding words are baloney.

Most papers just lie, though. About completely feasible, straight-faced news stories. Like the Daily Express, who yesterday reported that Daniel Craig had stepped down from the role of 007 and passed his blood-splattered tuxedo on to Tom Hardy.

The story was picked up by a couple of outlets before being called out by fans, but not before the Peaky Blinders star himself took to Instagram to set the record straight

The 40-year-old wrote: "Dammit I was in my tux and on the runway good to go. No drama. Return to base. Headed back to Nola stood down 19."

The actor is currently the odds-on favourite to inherit the role from Daniel Craig, who has promised (yet again) that this is his last outing.

Idris Elba, James Norton and Cillian Murphy are also reportedly in the running – but we think Hardy has what it takes to do the role justice.
