Keanu Reeves has never worn a chest-rig on a red carpet. He's never worn gold feathers or a boiler suit (unless he's changing the oil on one of his many, many motorbikes). But for three decades, he's worn a lot of black suits. There were the loose, Armani-cut suits in the Eighties. The breezy, suit-and-a-tee looks in which he slayed red carpets through the Nineties. And, of course, the trim tailoring in which he gunned down baddies in three turns as John Wick (and counting).

Fittingly, then, he hit the 2020 Oscars red carpet in an inch-perfect three-piece tuxedo, and in the process showed every other man there how black tailoring should be done. This was a year when acting's great and good turned their backs on all those sequins and silks, rainbow shades and headline-grabbing accessories, that mushroomed at premieres and award shows in 2018 and 2019. And who should they find waiting for them as they embraced the black suit again? The man who wears the look better than anyone else.

The best accessory with a black suit? Your mum, in all-white

It helped, of course, that he'd brought his mum along, and that she was dressed in an all-white outfit that only accentuated the inkiness of her son's get-up. And as you'd expect from a guy with this much practice, Keanu nailed the fit (just enough shirt cuff, the perfect shoe break) even pulling off the tricky slim-tux-over-tonal-waistcoat combo without looking like a snooker player. This was a masterclass in old-school Hollywood style from a guy who's become an A-lister despite rarely playing the fame game.

As we should know by now, Keanu goes his own way. And no matter the destination, you can bet on one thing – he'll arrive in the perfect black suit.
