Newman. Brando. McQueen. Gosling. Elba. Beckham. What do they all have in common? They're all icons of style, and they're all dead or over 35 - which as any teenager will tell you is more or less the same thing.

As the new year gets properly underway, we thought we'd cast an eye over the next generation of style icons - or rather, style 'influencers', a term the men in this list can self-apply without a trace of irony or self-loathing.

For inspiration on how to dress well in 2018, watch them closely. By which we mean follow them on Instagram, obviously.

ASAP Nast

The most-fashion forward of the Rocky-fronted ASAP Mob, Nast (real name Tariq Devega) is the kind of young and reckless Insta-ready pin-up that mixes hiking boots and new season Burberry, bucket hats and vintage Patagonia or, when he feels like saying “F*ck the man!”, a slim-cut black suit with a tailored overcoat and patent loafers.

The new rules of the young and stylish being: there are no rules!

Ok?

Timothee Chalamet

Starting the year reasonably brightly with a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars (for summer style guidebook / romance drama Call Me By Your Name), the 22-year-old New Yorker has been equally impressive on the red carpet where his breezy, youthful take on tailoring has seen him embraced as a muse by Haider Ackermann, the Creative Director of Berluti.

Great hair, too.

Lenny Kravitz’s Balenciaga-clad junior Doppelganger, Luka Sabbat is a preternaturally stylish New Yorker about town, instantly recognisable thanks to his thick dreadlocks, wispy moustache, ring-clad fingers and penchant for oversized cardigans and over-flowing trousers capped off with pointy suede Chelsea boots and an omnipresent spot in any and every self-respecting street style gallery.

Daniel Kaluuya

Since his rapid ascent to the top of the Exciting Young British Actors chart - confirmed in February with a well-deserved EE BAFTA Rising Star award - Get Out star Daniel Kaluuya has taken to fame with apparent ease. An excellent taste in soft - and occasionally adventurous - tailoring has only helped, with a particularly memorable paisley granddad collar shirt and red window check blazer combo marking him out as the best-dressed man at the BAFTA Los Angeles Tea Party in January. And roll-necks. Some lovely roll-necks.

Part drag, part punk, part high fashion acid-fuelled My Little Pony fantasy, Matty Bovan’s eponymous label is at the forefront of a fearless new wave of British design simmering with flair, bravado ... and really bold oversized knitwear.

Starting his brand out of a garage in York, the 27-year-old (who also models) has become one of the most memorable faces on the modern fashion scene, both thanks to his impossible-to-miss look (see above) and the ever-rising stock of his own designs.

Gunner Stahl

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

Most noted for his work behind the camera, as the go-to cool kid for candid portraits of moody eye contact-holding rappers with a ‘Lil’ prefix, 23-year-old Gunner Stahl is a self-made kind of creative with an instantly recognisable grainy, flash-heavy style of photography that has earned a Puma collaboration and 344,000 Instagram followers.

While his style of dress isn’t quite as ostentatious as his jewel-clad peers and subjects, the young photographer still presents himself as a subtle kind of streetwear aficionado, a latest Supreme collab with a plain white t-shirt kind of guy.

Michael B. Jordan

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

One of only an elite (questionable?) handful of men who can pull off the thinly-groomed moustache, B. Jordan’s is a considered and eclectic style. One that flits between high-end sportswear - suede bomber jackets and rare Nike’s - and youthful, sharp eveningwear, characterised by embroidered dinner jackets, tie-less fully-buttoned white dress shirts and the knowing smirk of a young actor who, seemingly, can do no wrong right now.*

*Don’t worry Michael, we’ve all forgotten about that Fantastic Four reboot.

Brooklyn Beckham

With a menswear icon as a father, you might have expected Brooklyn to rebel by wearing square-toed pleather shoes and growing a mullet, or something. Instead, the 18-year-old has skipped the experimental, gaffe-laden phase the befalls most young men (his pops included) and arrived straight at the always smart, always on trend, always event-appropriate status befitting the heir to the Beckham empire.

Sasha Trautvein

Perma-clutching a cigarette and a mournful close-to-tears gaze, the sashadidntwakeup (not his birth name) is a Russian model and Moscow scene kid who represents the mystery and allure of the hard-edged Soviet style re-packaged and taken global by designer and fellow countryman Gosha Rubichinsky.

Mixing expensive sportswear with a frayed, oversized aesthetic, the too-cool-to-care Russian’s look is rounded off with a trendily sombre tattoo reading, “Wake Up” beneath his dark-ringed right eye socket.

It’s a lewk, darlings.

Sergei Polunin

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

The youngest-ever principal dancer at London’s Royal Ballet, to see Sergei Polunin move - water and muscle and chalk dust flying - is to feel really bad about eating that burger for lunch and skipping your morning run.

But away from the floorboards and the stifled applause, the now-28-year old is also a slick formal dresser, a kind of a red carpet Count Dracula in a clean white shirt who can jump really high and do the splits and stuff.

Gabriel Kane

Musician, model, famous son (of acting GOAT Daniel Day-Lewis), 22-year-old Gabriel Kane is a front row regular with an enviable ability to shuffle his style pack, from skinny jeans and a Trilby to baby pink hoodies to goth-tinged tailoring. He also has a solid collection of tattoos (see them on Instagram today!) and - like his old man - a penchant for jewellery.

Tyler, the Creator

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

Currently banned from the UK (obscenities in his music or something) Tyler The Creator has made a name out of being a brash, crass and primary colour-fiending court jester of young hip-hop, starting with the California rap collective Odd Future before going on to found his own clothing label, Golf Le Fleur, along with personal collaborations with Vans and Converse.

A supremely confident dresser, Tyler’s style is defined by cropped, wide-legged trousers, suede skate shoes, striped polo shirts and dad-style baseball caps; the MO being: How many colours and patterns can fit into one outfit?

Skater meets prep, meets a huge box of Crayola, if you will?

Charlie Siem

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

A classically-trained pianist, educated at Eton and Cambridge, who has appeared in campaigns for Dunhill, Dior and Armani, 32-year-old Charles “Charlie” Siem is a peculiar breed of non-vlogging modern polymath; splitting his time between being really (really, professionally) good at playing the violin and looking just as adept in slim, classical tailoring.

AJ Tracey

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

Grime MC AJ Tracey has been a sportswear fan since childhood. "As a kid, I loved Air Force Ones – but they were so expensive. I always had to save up for ages to get them," he told Noisey last year. "Now I can call the Nike guy and be like 'can you send me ten pairs?' and they'll be here the same day."

No wonder Nike are happy to keep him in swooshes - no one else in Britain is making the brand look as good at the moment. See also: oversized camouflage puffa jackets, tracksuits and everything else for that tricky to master, just-popping-out-for-a-pint-of-milk aesthetic.

Blondey McCoy

When history looks back on the 'age of the influencer', one of the first names they'll record will be this 20-year-old professional skater, designer and artist - who went from high school drop out to Valentino and Burberry model (and streetwear icon) in less time than it took his classmates to make it to university. A Supreme and Palace collector of some repute, he also has his own label Thames that your 16-year-old nephew is desperate to wear. If he's cool.

Wiz Khalifa

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

With the build of an Italian greyhound and the confidence of, well, a multimillionaire rapper, Wiz Khalifa has turned super skinny-fit maximalist tailoring into his personal style forte.

We’re talking four buttons undone on a velvet shirt, an armada of gold and rubies; cropped trousers and Gucci loafers (the ones with the fur… of course); satin-lapelled dinner jackets and wrists stacked with gold.

Somehow, it all works. Blame it on that confidence and metabolism.

Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY

One of the most singular and talked-about talents in men's fashion, Glaswegian designer Charles Jeffrey LOVERBOY is revered by club kids and industry hacks alike for his theatrical runway shows, including this year's A/W offering that featured howling post-nightclub zombies. Unsurprisingly, his personal style is a colourful and anarchic pleasure to behold as well.

Finn Wolfhard

At 15 the youngest young man on this list of young men, Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard flies the flag for well-dressed teenagers everywhere during his frequent public appearances by bridging the world of grown up tailoring with being the world of being too young to enjoy the free Champagne via worn in sneakers, plaid shirts and skinny black ties.

Alden Ehrenreich

Bear Grylls//Digital Spy

A relatively decrepit 28, LA-born actor Alden Ehrenreich is about to have a big year as he steps into Harrison Ford's size 11s (we looked it up) to play Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Whether that film satisfies the fanboys or not remains to be seen, but Ehrenreich will find a welcome audience in menswear circles thanks to his excellent taste in impeccably cut suits. Making Han's utility vest look good should be a piece of cake.
