Tudor has announced a new watch in its signature Black Bay line. And it’s one custom-built for the purists.

The new Black Bay 54 is a 37mm model that makes direct reference to the brand’s first ever dive watch, released in 1954.

It keeps the historical proportions of that model’s 37mm case and 60-minute unidirectional bezel, but updates them with the 21st Century touches that have made the relaunched brand one the fastest-rising and most loved in watches.

Those modern aesthetics include Tudor’s trademark ‘snowflake hands’, a ‘lollipop’ seconds hand and a slightly more curved crown.

The bezel has a new slimmed down edge, too, making it easier to grip.

The new model comes in just one colour – black – and does not feature a date, two more decisions likely to please fans.

As we’ve come to expect from Tudor – watches built in the same manufacture as Rolex, and using at least some of Rolex’s know-how, but at a fraction of the price – the ‘younger sibling’ brand represents terrific value for money.

The Black Bay 54 costs £3,200 on a three-link ‘rivet-style’ bracelet and just £3,030 on a rubber strap. Both come with Tudor’s ‘T-fit’ rapid adjustment clasp.

For people who love the aesthetic of dive watches but struggle with their size, a smaller alternative to the existing 39mm Black Bay 58 is going to be very welcome news.

Watch this one fly.
