It’s been dubbed 'Ultimate Dad TV', but there’s no denying that the man mountain that is Jack Reacher has become one of Amazon Prime Video’s biggest hitters.
Based on the series of bestselling novels by British author Lee Child (currently made up of 28 books and a short story collection), the show stars Alan Ritchson as a nomadic, ex-military dude who roams around with an instinctive nose for disrupting criminals, solving murder and being unfathomably massive.
When the series was first released in February 2022, it became the most streamed television series of that week and has built a dedicated audience. So, needless to say, Amazon wasted no time in announcing a third season. Here’s everything you need to know:
When is Reacher series 3 out?
Well, right before series 2 premiered on 15 December, 2023, it was announced by Variety that series 3 had been commissioned. In a teaser video, Ritchson – who also serves as exec producer on the show – revealed that filming for the third outing had already begun.
“You’re on the set of season 3 of Reacher right now,” Ritchson says on the behind-the-scenes clip. “We’re officially underway.”
And in February 2024, the star told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that it was “nearing completion”. Allow for a few months in post-production and we could perhaps see the series on the streamer as early as Autumn 2024.
Who is in the cast of Reacher series 3?
Traditionally, apart from Ritchson as Reacher and a couple of other returning characters, each series begins by clearing the boards with all-new storylines and all new characters.
In February 2024, some new names were announced: Anthony Michael Hall and Sonya Cassidy would be joining as season regulars, and a few weeks later, Brian Tee, Johnny Berchtold, Roberto Montesino and Daniel David Stewart were also added to the line-up.
What happened in Reacher series 2?
Reacher series two was a bit of an old military 'crew: assemble'-type situation. When one member of their military police gang was murdered, Reacher brought together his colleagues to work out what the hell was going on, and to expertly neutralise the threat.
With a storyline encompassing a nefarious Big Tech corporation, a gang of mercenaries, terrorists and a whole lot of punch-em-ups, Reacher and his gang – what was left of them, at least – ended up uncovering who was behind the deaths, and walking away with a cool $65 million. Just enough to keep Reacher on his rambling road, armed with just a toothbrush and the XXL clothes on his back.
What’s going to happen in Reacher series 3?
As revealed already, season three will focus on the 2003 novel Persuader.
In the book – and this may change slightly for the TV adaptation — Reacher joins forces with the DEA and goes undercover in a bid to bring down Zachary Beck, a suspected drug smuggler who uses a rug trade as a front for his illegal business.
A kidnapping of a family member is set up, and Reacher assumes a fake identity as a bodyguard to Zachary’s son. However, all is not as clear cut as first thought.
Reacher also has a run-in with Francis Xavier Quinn, who brutally murdered his old colleague Dominique Kohl 10 years earlier. Will Reacher manage to complete his undercover task and seek revenge for Kohl?
How many more seasons of Reacher will there be?
Another unknown, but Ritchson is up for as many as his gigantic arms can carry. "I owe it to the audience to explore as many of these books as my body will allow, and I owe it to the people that took a shot on me when I was a huge risk for them," he told the Hollywood Reporter. "They have given me a real career."
From what Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon and MGM studios, has said, there's a pretty much unlimited scope for more Reacher, as well as other non-Reacher projects for Ritchson.
"He’s got movies in the works with us, series ideas. It’s not about the volume but about picking a few really special things,” Salke has said. “We’ll have Alan as long as he will play Jack Reacher. No end in sight for that, hopefully that’s for a very, very, very long time."
