Earlier this year, #homeinterior TikTok went crazy for the Unexpected Red Theory. Put simply, the idea is to incorporate pops of red into a room – especially those where you'd least expect to see the colour – to elevate, bring a sense of cohesion and add character to the space.
“I'm petitioning for red to be a neutral colour because it just looks good with everything,” says Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon in her viral video which has now racked up over 1.1 million views.
You can easily apply the same concept to your attire.
Just look at the autumn/winter 2024 men's runway shows. At Wales Bonner, a pair of fire engine red boots disrupted a preppy blue ensemble; an alarmingly scarlet knitted swim cap injected some oomph into a neutral corpcore look at Prada; oxblood shirts, outerwear and accessories got the front row looking, nodding and snapping at Gucci. Red also showed up unexpectedly in otherwise quiet looks at Loewe, JW Anderson, S.S. Daley and Fendi.
But autumn is a while away. So, for now, we look to the one label that's beaten them all to it: Stone Island.
For spring/summer 2024, the innovative, techy Italian fashion house has gone rouge; from the sweatshirts to the swim shorts to the caps to the cuffed trousers, you can now pick up almost any of the brand's hero pieces in the smoking hot hue.
In the brand's buzzy campaign starring the likes of Dave and Jason Statham, Tyrone Estrella (a London-based store manager) wears a postbox-coloured parka, Emilio Year0001 (co-founder and artistic director of a record label) rocks a ruby lightweight jacket and Tricky (rapper and record producer) sports a brick-hued metallic nylon raincoat.
Sure, Stoney doesn't apply Unexpected Red thinking here (they need to spend more time on TikTok, we fear), but nothing is stopping you from taking matters into your own hands and swapping out your denim for some of its red trousers, completing a look with a red cap from the marque or, if you're feeling particularly brave, layering one of its new-season red polos under a suit (we're thinking black and slim-fit like it's 2009).
If the interior influencers are seriously onto something, you'll find a fiery addition will turn a workaday 'fit into something worth flaunting on the #fyp.
