The Italian (design) job

Using beer as a design inspiration can be a delicate business, so we're very pleasantly surprised by the products on display at the Peroni Blue Ribbon Design Awards exhibition in collaboration with Alessi that opens at London's Institute of Contemporary Arts tomorrow.

To be completely accurate, it's not beer that's the inspiration so much as "aperitivo", the handy tipple-and-nibbles-before-dinner meal that's as much a part of an Italian's evening ritual as a passeggiata and a TV gameshow with no discernable rules presented by big breasted women.

The 30 shortlisted designers have created products especially for the occasion, such as this sleek platter and striking olive tree (though you may need to set aside a good half-hour to get the little blighters on the prongs).

Check out the designs from tomorrow until 4 October at the ICA, London, after which they will be exhibited at venues around the UK. For more information visit www.peroniitaly.com
