On most people's list of Christmas highlights, they come somewhere near the M4 traffic jam and falling out with your drunk Uncle about immigration.
But now one expert has suggested the reason why you hate the humble Brussels sprout: you've been cooking them all wrong.
Specifically, Matthew Rawson of the Brassica Growers Association told the Sunday Times, it's the cutting a small cross in the base thing many of us do before boiling them.
"Boiling them was traditionally the way of doing it, but putting the cross in puts in too much water," he said.
"They turn soggy and rubbish. People who do that have ruined the Brussels sprout.
"People now are learning that it is a very versatile vegetable. The big ones lend themselves well to a stir-fry."
So there you have it: no more excuses for discreetly coughing them into a napkin this year.
