Since Panerai partnered with the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team in 2017, the Italian watchmaker has been releasing watches in honour of the America’s Cup and the native squad of sailors.

And with the 37th tournament about to commence from Barcelona in August, Panerai is prepping its seamen with the new Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio, unveiled today at Watches and Wonders.

Hoping to get the team a trophy is a timepiece made with plenty of new tech. It’s the first to feature the new Super-LumiNova® X2 on the indices and hour hand, an improved grade that ensures a 10% higher luminosity than its predecessor after 180 minutes in the dark. The 42mm case is made from Grade 5 titanium, being 40% lighter and 60% harder than stainless steel and one of the main materials used to build the Luna Rossa boat.

As is needed with a watch destined for the sea, water resistance is up to 500 metres. Still, rigorous yet successful testing in pressure up to 25% greater than the guaranteed water resistance value proves that this timepiece works just as well below sea level as it does above.

Further nods to the Luna Rossa team come in the form of a GMT sail inspired by the boat’s sails, as well as a decal of it on the watch’s flange. And the blue sun-brushed dial will having you thinking about the ocean in whatever scenario you wear it.

“The synergy with Panerai takes us on a shared journey in pushing the limits of performance, where precision, innovation and a relentless pursuit of excellence are at the heart of our endeavours,” says Max Sirena, the team’s Skipper and Director.

Despite a rich history of wins in the Challenger section, Italy were defeated by New Zealand on three occasions in the 36th event in 2021. Will this horological accessory help to change that? Time will tell.

The Submersible GMT Luna Rossa Titanio PAM1507 will be available exclusively in boutiques from September 2024.
