Shop watch - Oliver Spencer

Experimentation in men's footwear has been getting a little out of hand lately. Hybrid shoes sound exciting in theory, but it turns out if you take a desert boot and cross it with a sandal, you end up looking like Paul Weller at a toga party. Shoe designer Oliver Spencer has been frustrated by the over-complication of men's footwear, too. So he decided to do something about it.

The Oliver Spencer shoe shop, which opens this week on Lamb's Conduit Street in London’s Bloomsbury, focuses on quality rather than fuss. Classy, no-nonsense, masculine design, whether it’s a sturdy Northampton-made lace-up or a moccasin that might even survive those Spring showers.

With understatement in mind, it’ll also be offering leather wallets from Il Bussetto and canvas bags from Sean Marshall. Says Oliver himself: “Men are not being looked after by the current crop of stores. We want to give blokes what they deserve: an old school shoe shop for the modern guy.” Oliver Spencer Shoe Shop, 62 Lamb's Conduit Street, London
