Hawksmoor Air Street

The kings of London’s steak scene have done it again, and this time they’re also serving seafood.

They made their name serving immaculately cooked dead cow in bustling, clubby dining rooms in Seven Dials, Spitalfields and Guildhall. Now the Hawksmoor team is tackling W1 with their biggest opening yet – a 235-cover restaurant just off Regent Street.

Far and away the largest of the Hawksmoor venues (there are an additional 55 covers in the bar), Air Street nonetheless retains the distinctive dark-wood, low-lit atmosphere of its sibling restaurants. The extensive drinks menu serves plenty of old favourites as well as a few notable newcomers – try the eponymous Air Street cocktail, or the remarkable Full Fat Old Fashioned, made with butter-infused bourbon.

Food-wise, the biggest news on the menu is the addition of seafood, courtesy of the award-winning Mitch Tonks (whose Seahorse restaurant was recently crowned Observer Food Monthly restaurant of the year). The highest quality lobster, monkfish and turbot are all present on the menu, cooked with the same precision and simplicity as Hawksmoor’s steaks.

Filling the room will be no mean feat, but if the bookings for this week’s soft launch are anything to go by - 11,000 people fought for a seat - then the Hawksmoor team are onto a winner. Perfect for a Wednesday night dinner with friends (that you’ll still be digesting on Friday).
