It's a film - well, two actually - that we're happy to describe as 'The Gallic Scarface". The story of France's most notorious criminal, Jacques Mesrine, has got it all: great haircuts, brilliant shades, cool clothes, tremendous French cars from the 1970s, beautiful women (none more so than the exquisite Ludivine Sagnier), not to mention jail breaks, shootouts and kidnappings galore. If you're going to see one gangster epic this summer then we'd strongly recommend you opt for Vincent Cassel (interviewed in the August issue of Esquire) over Johnny Depp, who stars in the Michael Mann-directed story of John Dillinger. Mesrine: Public Instinct and the follow-up, Mesrine: Public Enemy No. 1 are out at the beginning of August.
