Eddie Redmayne: My Style Rules

The Oscar winner and red carpet supremo on how to dress well

The truth is I only became more conscious of my style when I started acting, and when I started having fittings for costumes and working with tailors.

Having a tailor fit [a suit] for you, well that changes everything. Actually for a guy, all it involves is having a well-fitted suit. And what I love about suits is that framework is pretty simple. For women it's much more complicated. You have thousands of different choices and options, but with guys you have a suit and then you can just play within that framework.

I love suits that feel fitted, because I weirdly feel stronger in them. I'm a skinny guy so if something hangs loosely I tend to float about in it a bit: I feel somewhat awash. I do like to see a bit of cuff and a bit of watch peeking out from the sleeve of my suit.

My first Omega watch was a De Ville, which my dad had for many many years. He used to let me wear it. Then a few years ago when the Globemaster was released I became the face of that model. It had this very simple, beautiful elegance to it and I loved it.

My dad left school when he was 18 and started working in the city the next day, he's now in his late 70's and he's still working. He's got this kind of old-school style. He gets dressed in a beautifully tailored suit, he's got a cool tie, a slightly flamboyant pocket-handkerchief and I'm like, 'you're still rocking it'. So he always had a mixture of elegance and flair, which I suppose I always looked up to.

There is something reassuring about a beautifully-made watch. If you look at the back of these watches; the mechanics: there are really talented people behind them, craftsmen doing really good things - extraordinary things. Seeing the internal mechanics of a watch always blows my mind.

I think watches are super-personal. I really do, and I think what works for you depends on so many things. I can't wear a massive watch. I have quite thin wrists and so these huge gigantic things that would look great on Daniel Craig's wrist, probably wouldn't look so good on mine.

What I love about the new Omega Aqua Terra – the one with the rubber woven strap in particular - is that it has a classical elegance to it. You can easily wear it low-key, but because the dial is so distinguished you can also wear it more dressed up. The watches I love the most tend to be versatile watches.

I like a steel watch with a blue dial. I find blue dials very beautiful as I often wear blue. But I also have a white dial for dressier occasions.
