Bringing the game into disrepute

Petulant, self-regarding and nursing a well-developed persecution complex, one man left TV viewers shocked by his bad-tempered outburst last night – and it wasn’t Chelsea striker Didier Drogba.

While the Ivorian has hogged the headlines with his understandable four-letter tirade into a Sky Sports camera after his side’s late and controversial exit to Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final (only shocking for the fact he seemed to be wearing shower sandals), it was the behaviour of Philip Taylor, the mirror-loving estate agent from County Durham on The Apprentice, that was far more worthy of censure.

Having imploded in the boardroom, where he was up against his nemesis, Project Manager Lorraine Tighe, and the other object of his affections (the first being himself) - blonde, Tippex-teethed Kate Walsh, Philip greeted Sir Alan’s finger of doom with a bolshy shake of the head and a clearly audible ‘That’s a joke’ on his way out.

Philip’s unprecedented reaction was a direct affront to the established Apprentice etiquette which demands fired candidates to thank Sir Alan for the opportunity, whilst bowing and exiting backwards - and it remains to be seen whether he will face further disciplinary action.

After another witless display of business non-acumen, the clever money had been on the Amstrad boss throwing one of his trademark curveballs by sacking two or more of last night’s hapless wannabe business titans. But once Philip’s lip started quivering, his eyes moistened and the extent of his hatred for Lorraine became evident, however, it was clear that only one was destined for the lonely taxi ride into oblivion.

In his favour, he did at least have the good grace to later apologise for his obnoxious behaviour on the consistently excellent The Apprentice: You’re Fired. It remains to be seen whether Didier Drogba will do the same - although the clever money is not surprisingly being laid elsewhere.
