So long as you take care of them and have them re-soled as regularly as is necessary, a comfortingly expensive, properly made pair of shoes will last you forever (or near enough).
Go for a simple pair, which can be worn with both smart and more casual outfits. A chocolate brown derby or brogue always works well.
